Shakira, whose real name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, was born February 2, 1977, in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia. The name of "Shakira" in Arab means: "woman full of grace" and in hindu represents to the "diosa of the light"
Since girl, Shakira, showed her inclinations toward the music, composing and interpreting her own songs. She participated in various music contests, and in one of those contests achieved to grasp the interest of a representative of Sony Music, who offered her the possibility of working for them.
To the age of 14 years, in 1991, Shakira made her first album, titled "Magic". This job did not have a great success, but showed the potential talent of Shakira.
From that work, she had the chance to represent her country in the Festival of the OTI, which she could not attend, because she had not the prescribed age; and also in the festival of "Viña del Mar" (Chile).
In 1993, she published her second disc, " Peligror ", with moderate successfully.
Later, in 1996, she produce her third work, " Pies Descalzos ", with which she was able to extend at international level, getting to be number one in several countries. Of that disc the more importants themes were: "Estoy aquí", "Dónde estás corazón", and "Pies descalzos, sueños blancos" Thanks to this album, in 1997, Shakira won the Billboard prizes to the best album, the best video and the artist revelation of the 96. In addition, at the beginning of 1998 she received the prize to the best Latin Artist.
At the end of 1998, she published her album, " Dónde están los ladrones " with which she obtained several platinum discs in Colombia, USA, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Spain, and Central America. With this work she obtained a new Billboard prize to the best album. The themes more importants were: "Ciega, Sordomuda", "Ojos Así", "Inevitable" y "Tu".
In 1999, She made album " Shakira Unplugged "; for MTV, where she makes a count of its great hits. With this disc, she obtain the Grammy 2000 to the best Latin Pop Artist.
